Life gets so hectic around the holidays!! I don't know how people keep up with it all. I feel like I start to fall behind around Thanksgiving and by the New Year I'm ready to throw in the towel.
I made it into crossfit the day after Thanksgiving. I felt extremely swollen due to all the salt I consumed. I had just one plate of food, and really just normal/proper amounts of everything. Potatoes, stuffing, green bean casserole, turkey, gravy and some cranberry sauce. Nothing too extreme. Still the next day my joints hurt and my fingers and toes felt stiff. I was glad I got right back on the horse the day after the holiday. I was also proud that I only had about 6 bites of pie that evening. I used to use holidays as an excuse to not only eat bad food, but to stuff my face for days afterwards.
By the weekend I started to developed some terrible migraines. They were so bad that noises, smells, light, just about everything made it almost unbearable. Because my head hurt so bad I couldn't eat because it would make me feel sick. I couldn't sleep, couldn't eat, couldn't listen to music or watch a movie. It was all I could do just to make sure my kids got out the door for school and there was food for them to eat. That has been my existence for most of this week. I don't know what's causing them. I'm guessing stress, but who really knows for sure?
I felt a lot better this morning. I was able to make it to crossfit today. Hurray! My head still hurts but it's only a slight headache. Friday's are deadlift days, which are my favorite. I really feel badass when I can lift heavy weights. I lifted more than any of the girls there today. I'm still the fattest, but it's nice to not be the weakest as well.
We did a 10 minute kettle bell warm up. Followed by 5 sets of 5 heavy dead lifts. I pulled 205 lbs for my dead lifts. My personal record for a single rep is 225, so I'm pretty sure the next time I test my limit, I'll be able to beat my last record. 205 is hard. By the time I finished all my sets I was exhausted and sweat was dripping off my face. They sure don't look like they are hard or that they do much, but if you research the deadlifts, they are one of the better lifts as far as results go.
Here's an article that goes into way more detail.
Our WOD was a 6 minute AMRAP.
5 air squats
5 kettle bell swings
10 air squats
10 kettle bell swings
etc etc until the 6 minutes runs out.
I used a 25 lb bell. This was HARD!! 6 minutes sounds like it would be cake....it was not cake, it was more like torture. Jonathan came by about half way through the WOD and told me that my squats were looking awesome. He said my form was so much better than it used to. Hurray! I was ablet to get up to 25 squats and 17 kb swings before time was up. My lungs burned SOOO bad!
We finished off class with some cool down stretches and we were done.
I'd really like to finish December strong. No more sickness, no more migraines and getting in all my crossfit workouts. Time to get in a hot bubble bath and relax. It's flipping cold here today! I think our high today should be about 3 degrees. Brrrrr!!!!

I want it MY way!
Finally feeling better, hurray! I did make it to crossfit yesterday and it was great to get back in the game.
Warm up: run 400 meters then do a partner burpee ladder. Example: I do one burpee, partner does one burpee, I do two burpees, partner does two burpees etc etc until we both get to 7 burpees.
Skill set: kettle bell snatches, ab rollers, jump squats
We went over and over the proper techniques and then did 5 rounds of 5 snatches on each arm, 10 ab rollers and 5 jump squats.
WOD: This was a EMOTM (every minute on the minute) for 12 minutes:
3 kettle bell snatches on each arm and 7 up/downs (similar to a burpee)
I AM SO SORE TODAY!!!!!!!
So we finally found out the details of our paleo challenge and I'm super bummed. Usually it sounds like if you want to participate you pay $50. After 6 weeks the 3 people with the most impressive results get the cash prize. I believe Meagan said last time the winner won a few hundred dollars. Unfortunately this time they changed the rules. It's $15, no cash prize, and the $ goes towards a bbq meal that all participants will get after they complete the challenge.
I don't want any freaking food, I want to win $$$$$$!!!!! I'm sorry but winning $ to me is a hugely motivating. Eating a bbq meal is not. I know I know I'm acting like a spoiled child who isn't getting things her way. Still.......I'm quite frustrated. I'm embarrassed to admit I actually felt like crying after I read the new rules. *sigh*
Other rules include:
before/after pics
before/after weight
before/after measurements
doing a minimum of 3 WODS a week
a food log
We can partner up to support each other. I don't really have any friends there, so I guess I'm on my own.
I'm sure that if I can stick to 6 weeks of Paleo and 6 weeks of crossfit 3 times a week plus running.....that I'll see some decent progress in my health and fitness goals. I could've really used that prize money.
Oh well. Such is life. Time to "build a bridge and get over it". (as my husband likes to say) ha!

Man Makers
The last couple of days have been rough, really rough. My husband and I have not been getting along so well. He's super stressed about his job and I'm stressed trying to keep everything at home together. So to make a super long story short, things have been stressful and we're not doing so well at leaning on each other when we should.
I woke up today depressed and sad. It was raining and super dark outside. I just wanted to send the kids off to school and go back to bed and watch movies.
Instead I got my workout clothes washed and dried, a protein shake made and headed out the door. I'm always glad when I go. I feel so much happier and stronger than I did when I woke up.
Our warm up was to grab a partner and throw a medicine ball back and forth. We did overhead tosses where we'd catch the ball, go into a deep squat and then toss the ball overhead to our partner. We did a few others and then moved onto our skill sets. We practiced Turkish get-ups. We'd start off with a light kettle bell and then move up to our max weight. The heaviest bell I was able to use was 26 lbs. It was SO hard to do and my left arm, which is definitely my weak arm, felt like it was going to buckle under the weight. Then I look over and see girls who are half my size using 50 lb kettle bells with ease.

They were hard, and my whole body is dead to the world but I feel really good inside. I'm crossing my fingers that this weekend goes smoothly. I can't stand tension within the home. Hope you all have a happy and healthy weekend.

deep squats
I can totally feel my strength coming back after being ill. Yay! It kinda freaked me out on Monday when my muscles literally wouldn't work. Today's workout at crossfit was great. It was hard, it's always hard, but I felt really good by the time it was over.
We did ankle and hip mobility for our warm up. Whew, very difficult for me to do some of those moves. Although the cool part was I was actually able to do them, where as two months ago I couldn't. Literally couldn't. I can feel my squats are getting a lot deeper. When I first started my deep squats were more like super shallow ones for everyone else. My hip mobility was awful. I'm slowly getting my hips in good working order and am getting stronger so my squats are getting closer and closer to what they should be.
Our skill set was stepping off a box and landing in a deep squat and then jumping up and high as we could with one strong thrust. We also did Turkish getups and kettle bell windmills.
Our WOD was a 10 min. AMRAP.
10 kettle bell power cleans
5 ab rollers
15 wall balls
I actually just looked at our WOD online and realized we were supposed to be doing 15 wall balls and I was only doing 10 per round....OOOPS! Apparently I wasn't with it when they explained the WOD.
I finished 5 complete rounds (with my 10 wall balls vs. the 15 we were supposed to do).
Today is a busy day. I have 1st grade open house for my daughter and 6th grade open house for my son. I have a house that needs to be cleaned and picked up. The 6th grade open house is from 5:30-7:00pm. So we either eat a super early dinner or a fairly late one. Ugh! I should get my crap together and put something in the crockpot so I don't have to scamper and scurry to get dinner out as soon as we get home.
Tomorrow is another running day. Woohoo, bring it!

50 burpees.....third time around
Last night was awful. I barely slept due to a horrible migraine. I'm allowing the stresses of life get to me and it's dragging me under. Significant stress always seems to manifest itself into migraines for me. Ugh!!
I didn't go to crossfit. I instead took some medication and stayed in bed until it was just a mild headache.
After I felt better I decided to do what Derek told me to do a few months ago when I couldn't make it into the gym. 50 burpees. I set my stopwatch and started. I was able to complete 50 burpees in 6 minutes and 21 seconds. Now this is the 3rd time I've timed myself doing 50 burpees.
April 26th ~ I completed 50 burpees in 11 minutes 51 seconds.
May 29th ~ 9 minutes 31 seconds
August 16th ~ 6 minutes 21 seconds
What a huge difference!! I've almost cut my first time in half. Woot woot!! I followed the burpees with 10 minutes of kettle bell exercises. I'm bummed I couldn't make it in today, but I'm proud of myself for at least doing something.
My goal for this weekend is just try to let go of the things in my life that I can't control. My health is more important than stressing over every little thing.
Have a happy and healthy weekend!

Shoulders on fire!
We started off in groups of two for our warm up. We each did 4 rounds of junkyard dog and bear crawls back and forth across the gym. I did three rounds before we moved on to the skill sets. I'm so flipping slow. ARGG! So annoying!
Our skill set was approx. 20 minutes of various kettle bell exercises. This was literally nonstop. I was a sweaty mess going into the WOD.
The WOD today was 50 pull ups, then run 1/2 mile, then a total of 20 kettle bell movements per arm. We then ran another 1/2 mile and then did another 20 kettle bell movements per arm.
I was the slowest person today but I finished. I didn't take a modified run, I did exactly what was asked of me. I have no idea what my time was because Meagan thought everyone had finished and she turned off the timer on the wall. Oh well. At this point I don't even care what my time was, I just care that I finished.
During our kettle bell skill set a new gal had to stop, went to the restroom, and then came out and started crying. She went outside and Jonathan went to go talk w/ her. I felt bad. I so know how it feels. I wanted to pull her aside and talk with her after class, but she was gone by the time I finished my workout. I hope she doesn't let today get her down. I don't even know her name. =( Next time I see her, I need to make a point to say hi and tell her I've had many of those experiences myself and that it gets better.
Today's after workout protein shake consisted of coconut water, protein powder, stevia, and some frozen organic berries. Delish!!!! I'm loving the coconut water. ♥

Fat Girl Walk of Shame at the Amusment Park
I've been in a bit of a depression the last couple days. On Monday we went to Silverwood Theme Park with the kids. It's like a smaller version of Six Flags in North Idaho. I was nervous and didn't really want to go. My kids all earned free tickets from a reading program they did at school last year and we promised we'd take them this summer.
As a child my parents would buy us family season passes every year. And every year I remember seeing fat people get turned away after they couldn't fit in the rides. I never wanted to be that person.
I was super hesitant to even try a ride. I chose to try the umbrellas first. They were a little more forgiving as far as large people go. The attendant had to wedge the bar deep into my thighs to get the bar to close properly. I was absolutely mortified. Here I'd just lost 5 inches off of each thigh and yet I still was no where near where I should be (size wise) to fit on the ride. I was in physical pain the entire ride. It hurt my legs so bad that I couldn't feel my feet by the time it was over. It was everything I could do to hold it together and not cry.
I tried a couple more rides that I knew I could do, but 90% of the rides were totally off limits. I just knew I'd be kicked off the ride for not being able to fit my fat ass in the seat. I HATE BEING FAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I HATE IT HATE IT HATE IT! I would just walk around to different rides with the family and then wait while they stood in line. It's humiliating to have to explain to my kids why I couldn't join them on the roller coasters.
Instead of using Monday to fuel my desire to continue getting healthier, I stumbled. I ate poorly yesterday. I ate a pancake for breakfast, then for lunch ate about 10 cookies, and for dinner I had a small bowl of baked beans and a plate full of pasta salad. No protein, no fruit or veggies, nothing healthy what so ever. Instead I ate nothing but carbs that left me feeling sick and lethargic.
This morning I hit the snooze and figured I'd just skip my crossfit workout. Somewhere around 8:30 I got up and decided that enough was enough. I grabbed my workout clothes, ate a super quick breakfast, and got to crossfit just in the nick of time. I'm so glad I went. It helps keep my focus when I force myself and go. I can't let a bad day at the amusement park ruin all that I have accomplished so far. I have to keep fighting for what I want.
Our warm up and skill set was all arm and shoulder movements. Ooooh my shoulders were burning!
Our WOD was a 12 minute AMRAP.
10 pushups
10 box hops (up and over the box)
10 overhead kettle bell swings
I was able to get 6 rounds in and 9 reps.
Tomorrow is another day. I will make smart choices tomorrow and get in my couch to 5k run in.
Next year I'm going to go back to Silverwood and ride every single ride and I'll fit with ease! Watch me!

SHITEE
Yesterday was a very long, very exhausting day. I cleaned for several hours at my aunt's house. I seriously dislike cleaning houses, but it helps pay for crossfit so I can't really complain. As I was scrubbing the many toilets I just kept reminding myself that I was teaching my children a good lesson in working hard for what you want. My son had a friend spend the night, so after cleaning I had to google something to make for dinner that was kid friendly and gluten free, since his friend has a severe gluten intolerance. After dinner was made and cleaned up, we went and rented the kids a movie and took them out for ice cream. I didn't get to bed until close to midnight. I was up again at 6am because the kids were up and being noisy. I did not want to put on my workout clothes and go to crossfit. *yawn*
I did end up going after all. I'm glad I did. Our warm up was a 400 meter partner medicine ball run. I'd throw the ball to my partner who'd run about 10-15 in front of me. Once they caught the ball, I'd run 10-15 feet in front of them and they'd throw the ball to me. Back and forth, for 400 meters. It was actually kind of fun. =) Did I just say that?!?!
Our skill set was several rounds of various lunges, kettle bell exercises, and using the ab rollers.
The WOD was a 12 minute AMRAP (as many rounds/reps as possible).
We did 5 pull ups, 10 shitees, and 20 double unders. Over and over and over for 12 minutes.
Now I googled shittee's to see if I could find a good picture to demonstrate what they were and all I could find was was various info directly from my crossfit. So I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume that it's a move or a name that my crossfit made up. I must admit, the name accurately describes how they make a person feel after doing them. Pretty dang shitty(ee). ;)
You stand up, bend over, and put your hands on the ground. You jump back with your feet into a push up position. Then you jump back up with your feet so they're on the outside of where your hands are on the ground, then you jump back again, then forward....over and over without standing up or resting. It was not easy to jump back and forth with my big behind. My arms were so tired trying to keep me up.
I was able to barely complete 6 rounds. Halfway through the AMRAP, Derek told me to do 30 single unders instead of the 60 single unders I was doing each round. Normally if the WOD says to do double unders and you are not physically able to do them, then they triple that number for single unders. So I did 60 for 3 rounds and my last 3 rounds I did just 30.
One of the gals I see working out when I'm there, came up to me today and told me that I did awesome today. She said I "killed the workout". That meant so much to me!!! I need to make more of an effort to tell others when I notice them doing awesome as well. We all need to hear it and we're all there for the same reasons.....to better ourselves. I'll be going again tomorrow and then again on Friday.
Would it be too terrible of me to put a movie on for the kids and take a teeny nap? I'm so so so tired!

Grace
I got super busy on Friday and wasn't able to post anything, but I did go to CrossFit like a good girl. Seems like as the summer progresses the busier I get. I was sore all weekend from last weeks workouts. It was the "good" kind of sore. =)
My mother in law comes in exactly two weeks. I'm trying super hard to not let her stress me out, but after 12 years of dealing with her crap, it's easier said than done. I'm just bracing myself for some rude comments about my weight or how I raise my kids, or what we eat. She gets pretty angry when I don't have my house stocked with her favorite foods and beverages. I don't buy potato chips or soda or cookies or most other junk food. If my family is craving something sweet, then I will make it homemade. Processed foods and drinks are no longer allowed in our home. Anyway, I know I shouldn't dwell on what has yet to occur.
On a different note today we did "Grace".
The warm-up was a 400 meter run, and then we grabbed a partner and did "junkyard dog". It's jumping over your partner and then crawling underneath them. Running and jumping.....not my best strengths. We did a killer kettle bell skill set. Lunges with kettle bells, sit ups with kettle bells, and sitting in a lunge position, lifting the kettle bell over head over and over....several rounds of everything. I was feeling quite exhausted after the warm up and skill set......I just wanted to go home at that point. I think forcing myself to actually attend class is good for me because I'm starting to realize how easily I give up or want to quit. If I was home alone, I could pretty much guarantee that I'd have quit and stopped.
Our WOD was "Grace". Grace is 30 clean and jerks. They want girls to do 95lbs. I was only able to do 45 lbs and it was SO incredibly hard. First of all the movement is so not natural for me. It was frustrating me that I couldn't seem to grasp the concept of how to do the lift properly. Megan helped me out and after some practice I got the hang of it. We had to do 30 reps, no matter how long it took. I was able to get it done in 6 min 15 seconds. The tops of my shoulders felt like they were going to shrivel up and fall off, taking my arms with them. Just picking up my purse when it was time to go home was quite the feat. haha
Here is a 2 min video showing how to do clean and jerks.
It's a cloudy and rainy day. A perfect day to relax after my tiring morning. I need to figure out something smart for dinner. Time to hit the web and look for some yummy paleo recipes.
On a different note today we did "Grace".

bear crawls and burpees, oh my!
Hope everyone had a nice Mother's Day weekend. We went to church and then we grabbed the dog and we all went down by the lake to enjoy a picnic lunch. My kids each made me handmade cards and gifts, they were darling. =)
I felt great walking into CrossFit today. Normally I get super nervous the entire car ride there, but today I felt at peace. We started off doing wheelbarrow walks, but I'm not strong enough to do those quite yet, so they had me do three 30 second rounds of bear crawls. Those are no fun, like not even a tiny bit. nope. not fun.
We did push ups, good mornings, Turkish get-ups, and 20" box step ups with two kettle bells held under our chins. I did 15" box step ups. The 20" boxes are insanely high for me....at this point at least. I met another newbie and we were both wiped out after all the skill sets.
These are the Turkish get-up's
Our WOD was to do 3 clean and jerks and 8 burpees every minute on the minute (EMOTM) for 10 minutes. I had mine modified a bit to my fitness level. Burpees are so incredibly hard to do when you're heavy. Having extra stomach fat and thigh fat really gets in the way of the movement and makes it incredibly hard when you have to jump back into position to stand back up. Being a thick girl sucks big time.
I can see and feel a difference in my clothes, but I'm impatient. I want to wake up tomorrow and have magically dropped 6 sizes. I just don't understand why that doesn't happen. hehe
I had a small bit of dessert last night with my family and my mom, but today it's back on the Paleo bandwagon. Time to get something to eat, I'm famished!

Endurance!!
It's been a few days since I've blogged. I've been taking advantage of the gorgeous weather to do all my planting. I got a ton of flowers planted and started a container garden. I used a half of a whisky barrel and planted organic rainbow carrots and 5 gallon buckets to plant sweet bell peppers and jalapenos. I also got 3 huge organic beefsteak tomato plants in containers as well. Can't wait to see how the veggies do!
I woke up feeling pretty awful. Super sore throat, tummy ache, and stuffy nose. I took some meds, drank a chocolate sunbutter protein shake and went to Crossfit despite my brain telling me to stay home and rest in bed.
Our warm up was .......you guessed it....running. We ran 400 meters. I was shocked that I was able to run the entire way and was only behind the rest of the group by about 5 seconds. How and when did that happen? Don't get me wrong, I was super tired and breathing like I was going to die, but I did it and kept up. Yeehaw! I can feel my endurance increasing and it's so exciting!
Next we did our skill set, which was deadlifts. The first time I only used 20 lbs and was focusing more on form than weight. Today I was able to do several sets of 150 lbs. I know that to some that is not much weight, but for someone like me who hasn't done any type of lifting in her life except to lift food to her lips, this was quite exciting. =)
Our WOD was 5 rounds of
25 double unders ( I had to do 75 single unders)
18 overhead kettle bell swings
12 20" box jumps (I do 15" box steps)
For some reason I had it in my head that I only had to do 3 rounds and by the end of the third round I could feel all my energy being drained away. Catching my breath seemed almost impossible and I was drenched. As I was finishing up the last two box steps I looked up at the white board and realized I still had 2 more rounds to go. FUDGE!!!! I could feel tears start creep up and told myself to just shut up and not cry and finish the flipping WOD. I finished in 12min 21 seconds. To say I was wiped out would be the understatement of the year. I'm glad I went despite not feeling good this morning. My throat still hurts like a mother, but other than that I feel fine. This weekend will be spent outdoors so we can continue working on our back patio. Fingers crossed I get some sun.....I'm tired of being so pale I almost look neon white.
Happy Mother's Day to all you mom's!

Less Is More
My grandmother's memorial was very beautiful. I'm sad she's gone from us but feel peace knowing she's with her Savior.
I didn't eat the best this weekend. I had my parents and sister over for dinner Friday night. We ate grilled chicken and sausages, a big green salad, a pasta salad, and for dessert we had pound cake with homemade strawberry and huckleberry sauce to drizzle over. Saturday was the memorial and I ended up eating a cookie and 2 pieces of cheese during the gathering afterwards. We skipped lunch and were all starving. Later in the evening my brother, sister and I all went out to eat. As we sat down we realized it was the first time all three of us had done anything together since becoming adults. How strange and sad. We had a good time. We ate delicious Greek food and finished off our meal with a square of baklava. Mmmmmm!! Do I feel guilty about not staying strictly Paleo.....not really.
Yesterday after church we took the kids and the dog and went on a 3 mile hike. It wasn't some sissy hike, it was an intense, fairly steep hike up to the top of a ridge and then a steep trek back to the bottom. It took us about 2 hours. We were all pretty wiped out. I was proud of the kids for making it all the way and I was proud of myself for sticking to it. About halfway up my husband suggested to turn around and go down and I told him that none of us are handicapped and have no reason why we couldn't complete the entire hike. I think he was surprised and pleased I kept going.
I did get to attend my CrossFit class today. HURRAY!!!! One of the trainers pulled me aside and asked if I did the burpee workout they emailed me. I told him I did and that I also added a smaller kettle bell workout to it and finished up with 25 more burpees. He looked a little frustrated and then told me that I was doing too much. He said that less was more and what I did wasn't necessary. I wanted to lift up my shirt and grab all my extra flab, shake it in his face and say, really?!?!?!? It sure feels necessary when I'm such a fattie still. I was a little hurt because I felt like I really pushed myself last week to get in some great workouts despite not being able to make it into class. I have a super hard time when people criticize how I do things. I tend to retreat inward and shy away from them. He wasn't mean about it, he was just upfront and straight to the point. Apparently when he tells me to do 50 burpees that's it.....I'm not to add or change the workouts given. I need to suck it up and and not let his critique damped my spirit. Now I know and I won't make that mistake again.
Today was hard. We started off doing various types of lunges, most of which I'd never heard of before. One was called the spider-man lunge.....it was definitely my favorite.
We did lunges back and for across the gym for about 5 full minutes. My legs were burning and quivering by the end. Next we split up and did the skill sets. The advanced group went with Jonathan and the rest went with Megan. Megan had us grab a set of bars that were about 8 inches off the ground. We were to hold onto them and lift our bodies off the floor for 10 seconds and then rest for 20 seconds. I wasn't able to lift my entire body off the floor. My heels still touched, but I at least was holding about 75% of my body weight off the floor. We did that over and over and over and over. I don't know how many rounds we did. It felt like an eternity. Next we grabbed kettle bells and did 10 rounds of 8 squats while holding the bell to our chests and then 5 kettle bell rows with each arm.
By the end I looked like I dunked my head under water. Sweat was pouring off my face and my hair was matted and sticking to my wet face and neck. All my muscles were shaky and burning. It's only because others were there and I had accountability that I didn't leave and go home at that point. I didn't want to do the WOD, I was flippin' tired!!
We had about a 5 minute break and then started our WOD. We started off with 2 minutes of burpees and then did 3 rounds of
10 push ups
10 box jumps ( I did box step ups)
10 kettle bell swings over head
and then we finished off with another 2 minutes of burpees.
Those last two minutes of burpees felt like a living hell. My body is so heavy that going to the floor and back up over and over is absolute torture! I finished though and was super glad I didn't cry even though I felt like it. I just wanted to sit in the corner and bawl my eyes out. Afterwards we all did a cool down while rolling our muscles out on some foam rollers. I caught one young gal looking at me. I actually caught her several times. I immediately looked down away from her eyes, I don't like people looking at me. I looked down at my legs and saw just how fat my thighs were. Was she looking at me because I am a fattie? I always assume the worst case scenario. Oh well. I'm not there for them, I'm there for me. I'm anxious to start seeing some big results in my weight and size. Is it too much to ask to just wake up tomorrow and be thin? Hehe
What I'm eating today:
Breakfast~chocolate protein shake
after workout~turkey vegetable soup
Lunch~salad with homemade dressing and grilled chicken
Dinner~paleo stuffed peppers and sweet potato fries

50 Burpees in 5 minutes
I emailed my trainer last night letting him know I couldn't make it in again today because my daughter is still too sick. I shared with him the workouts I created for myself on Monday and Wednesday and asked if he had any suggestions on something I could do at home for Friday. He wrote back and told me to try and do 50 burpees in under 5 minutes and if I could do that, then to do 25 more.
I set the stop watch on my phone and got started. I finished 50 burpees in 11 minutes and 51 seconds. Not even close to the 5 min mark and they were modified burpees even. Ugh! I suppose at least I know what my time is and I can just keep working on trying to beat it.
After the burpees I felt like I had more to give, so I ended up doing 3 rounds of:
10 right 15lb kettle bell snatches
10 left kettle bell snatches
10 sit ups
After I finished my three rounds I decided to do those last 25 burpees even though I wasn't able to do the first 50 in 5 minutes. Those last 6 were brutal.
I can't believe how drenched I was afterwards. I feel so good and I'm really happy that I pushed myself to finish.
I'm looking forward to taking a break this weekend. We'll be attending my grandmother's funeral tomorrow. The weather should be just gorgeous.
What I plan on eating today:
Breakfast/post workout meal~chocolate protein shake
snack~apple w/ almond butter
Lunch~salad w/ pork tenderloin and a homemade dressing
Dinner~grilled chicken and sausages, side salad, roasted asparagus

I want my mommy!
My husband woke me up at 5am as he was leaving for work to let me know our daughter had a temp of 103. Seriously? I'm starting to wonder if she is licking the handles of grocery carts and door knobs, because I swear she's been getting sick nonstop for the past few months!! Guess it's another day of crossfit at home.
After I got my boys off to school, I took my daughter and ran to Walmart to get some fever meds and decided to see if they carried kettle bells. They did!! I bought a 15 lb bell and when I got home I went online and found a few at home crossfit type workouts to do at home.
Todays warm up consisted of 3 rounds of:
25 jumping jacks
10 push ups
10 squats
My WOD was 5 rounds of :
10 right hand kettle bell snatches
10 left hand kettle bell snatches
10 right hand kettle bell swings
10 left hand kettle bell swings
10 sit ups
It took me about 14 minutes to finish. I was sweating bullets by the 4th round. It's a gorgeous day here, maybe after the older kids get home from school I can take a quick 1 or 2 mile walk while they keep an eye on their sister and do their homework.
What I'm eating today:
Breakfast~ham and egg scramble
post workout snack~coconut milk protein shake
Lunch~large salad with pork tenderloin and homemade dressing
Dinner~homemade paleo spaghetti meat sauce over spaghetti squash and a side salad
evening snack~1 square of dark chocolate and a cup of tea
I'm totally digging the Endangered Species chocolate at the moment.

CrossFit and the flu..........
I had to cancel my workout on Monday. I was up most of the night with the flu and spent most of the day in bed. I got a call Monday afternoon that my grandmother had died. She'd been battling dementia for almost 10 years and it was heartbreaking to see her memory fade. The last time I saw her was Christmas and she didn't know who I was. It was then I knew that I had already lost my Nana.
Fast forward to today and I still don't feel quite back to normal. I'm still a bit nauseous, but chose to go to CrossFit anyway. I'm determined to make this a normal part of my life. I don't want sickness, death, whatever, to get in the way. I have to change my life, I have to stick to my goals, I have to keep my eyes on the prize and not waver when life throws barriers in my way.
I had to modify just about everything we did today. I had to keep reminding myself that I'm not there to impress anyone, I'm there to just keep getting better. Our warm up wasn't too horrible, but the skill set had my stomach rolling. We got a quick 3 or 4 min break between our skill set and our WOD, so I got a quick sip of water, used the restroom and told myself that no matter what I was not going to get sick.
Our WOD today was what they called Ten Plus Two. We had ten minutes to do as many rounds as possible. 8 push ups ( I did girly push ups), 10 toes to bar (I did 20 second planks), and 6 left & 6 right kettle bell snatches. Once the ten minutes were up we did double unders for 2 minutes. I just did regular single unders. We were supposed to keep track of our rounds and write our scores on the white board. I know I got over 4 rounds done but lost track when the pain started to set in. I forgot to count my single unders. I was just trying to not die and not puke on the floor. SIGH...............one of these days I'll get my crap together. ;)
After the WOD we did some deep stretches which felt great and then I headed home. I've noticed it takes me a good hour to completely cool down after these workouts. I still feel super sick to my stomach and food in general just sounds disgusting. I'm hoping by Friday I'm back to normal and can kick some WOD ass. hehe
What I ate today:
Breakfast~ 1/2 egg, 1 slice of bacon
post workout~1/3 protein shake
If I can stomach it, I'll have a salad with chicken and avocado for lunch and spaghetti (w spaghetti squash) for dinner.

What I ate today:
Breakfast~ 1/2 egg, 1 slice of bacon
post workout~1/3 protein shake
If I can stomach it, I'll have a salad with chicken and avocado for lunch and spaghetti (w spaghetti squash) for dinner.

Frightened Fatty does CrossFit bootcamp #4
Here I thought I'd be able to enjoy a nice three day break from my workouts, boy was I wrong. Our entire family came down with the flu. Coughing, fevers, congestion, we all felt miserable. We cancelled Easter dinner with my parents and just stayed home. For once in my life, I fared better than the rest. I'm wondering if all my clean eating, and overall treatment of my body, made my symptoms not so severe. hmmmm
I made a yummy Easter breakfast that was still paleo. I scrambed up some eggs, bacon, fresh strawberries, grapes, and made some paleo apple cider donut holes. I don't have a donut maker, but I do have a cake pop maker, hence why mine were the holes. ;)

They were different, but still really good. I thought they were better after sitting for a couple hours. I love donuts. I could easily eat half a container of donut holes in one sitting. These just don't have that addictive quality to them. I had three with my breakfast and another one a few hours later. My three picky kids each had a couple and thought they were quite tasty. Hubby loved them. yay! It was nice to make something kinda fun without feeling guilty.
My 11th wedding anniversary is this Saturday. Hubby has the whole night planned and won't tell me anything except that we'll be having champagne and strawberries delivered to our hotel room after dinner. I'm going to enjoy my anniversary dinner and try to eat as paleo as possible but not worry too much about it either. I will have a glass of champagne or two and not ream myself over it. It's life and I'm not going to let an anniversary stop me from meeting my goals, nor am I going to get all paleo Nazi about it either. So there! Enough on that subject.
The workout tonight was rough. We started off with a little run. This time we only ran 200 meters, which I could at least run the entire way without stopping. Then we did squats. Shocking, I know! After squats we did kettle bells. I always thought kettle bells looked fun. I've seen people use them on the Biggest Loser many times and they didn't seem so bad. We learned 4 different kettle bell moves. After the 1st one I was dripping sweat so bad that there was a circle of little drops of sweat all around me on the floor. I was so very tired. The next three weren't as exhausting as the 1st was. After we learned several moves we swung kettle bells for almost 5 minutes, changing positions as we went. There was a moment I thought I might need to vomit, but I held it together and finished the workout.
Afterwards I felt great. I never knew such a "high" existed. I can't believe how much energy I feel after my workout. I'm exhausted of course, but there is an energy current that buzzes through my body for a good few hours afterwards. I love it!
I was thinking about my food today and realized for the first time in my life....literally......everything I put in my mouth I'm using to fuel my body. I think about what I need to get through the morning, or my workouts, etc etc and I make smart choices based on what my activities are. It's something I've been told many times before but for some reason it just all makes sense now. I don't feel deprived that I can't have X Y and Z, instead I feel joy when I fuel my body with what it needs to thrive. Food has ruled my life and my choices since I was 8 years old. For the first time in 25 years, I'm in control of what I put in my mouth and into my body. I'm letting my food be my fuel. It's such a simple concept and yet it feels so profound. I'm so very grateful for the changes I feel in my head and in my heart. I'm so ready to change my life for good.
I'm hoping that a day off tomorrow will allow my body to fully recover from this flu and that I can rock Wednesday's workout.

Lunch~spaghetti squash, ground turkey, salsa, avocado

My 2nd CrossFit bootcamp workout......
Well I must say my 2nd workout was MUCH better than my 1st. I didn't puke. I didn't cry. I actually finished my entire workout. woohoo! Last night we started off with more squats. Then we squatted again. Then we squatted all the way down....to where your rear is just a fraction of an inch above the ground. I can't personally go that far down because of all the excess fat on my stomach and thighs, but I did the best I could. We held this squat for 3 or 4 minutes while Derek was yapping about the importance of squats. I couldn't hold it.....I kept standing back up to rub my burning ham hocks. He eventually had me hold onto a support beam while I was in a deep squat to help me from falling over. He told us that we need to practice deep squats at home for about 5 minutes a day...basically sitting in a squat for a solid 5 minutes without standing up. Good grief! He told me to start off just doing 60 seconds at a time and holding onto a doorknob to keep from falling over and to slowing extend my time as I got better at it and then to eventually not hold onto anything.
After panting from our squats we moved onto dead lifts. Of course these involve squats as well. We practiced using metal pipes that will eventually have weights added to them. We did several of these as Derek watched our form. I love that all the CrossFit instructors are really big on form. That really sets my mind at ease. I don't want to get injured by doing these moves wrong and I feel better knowing they're watching me and letting me know when I'm doing it wrong.
Next we move onto kettle bell dead lifts.....again......it includes squats. We do several of these we all can feel our thighs quivering from exhaustion. We follow up the kettle bell dead lifts with burpees, which I now see are slightly different than down and ups. I'm tired, all my muscles are quivering and I'm ready to go home. Derek lets us take a quick water break and then it's time to start our workout. Derek pulls me aside and lets me know that we'll be doing 4 rounds of 10 kettle bell dead lifts and 30 seconds of burpees, but that I can just do the kettle bells if I want. I tell him thanks, but am thinking, HELL NO! I came to CrossFit to push myself all the way and I'm not going to sit out on anything. Nope nope nope. I appreciate him trying to take it easy on me, but I need to prove to myself that I have the will to get through anything.
I got through all 4 rounds. I did a modified burpee, and could only do about 5 each 30 second round, but at least I tried and I gave it my all. Afterwards we were all dripping with sweat and were panting like dogs. It felt great!!!!! We talked more about nutrition and went into depth on Paleo eating. I stood there listening and just felt at peace. As if I finally found what I've always been looking for. This is where I want to be, these people are the type of people I want in my life, and my life is never going to be the same from this point on. If I had the energy and the capability I would've done cartwheels all the way home.
I go again today for my 3rd bootcamp workout of the week. I'll get 3 days off to rest and enjoy Easter with my family before we start up again.
What I ate yesterday:
Breakfast~2 eggs, 2 slices of bacon, 1 cup fresh pineapple, 1 cup of coffee
snack~handful of organic unsulfered dehydrated apples
lunch~1/3 cup sweet potato, 4 oz of ground turkey
snack~green salad with 2 oz of leftover steak and homemade oil and vin dressing
dinner~7 oz ground turkey patty, large green salad w/ homemade dressing
snack~1 TBS almond butter and 1 square of 72% dark chocolate
