Moving for 31 days

Today I took my dog on a 3.5 mile hike.  It was so pretty today.  The sun would peek out from the clouds every once in a while.  It poured rain a few times, but for the most part it was lovely.

View from the top of the ridge.

Since I'm eating Paleo for the entirety of October, I thought I'd give myself another challenge....to get some exercise in every single day.  I will crossfit M, W, and F......the rest of the week can be anything from a hike, a walk, whatever.....just as long as I get in some exercise every single day.

You know what else I'm going to do different this October??  I'm not going to buy one single piece of Halloween candy.  None.  For me that's a huge deal.  I'd always buy several bags of various mini candy bars and many times I'd eat most of the candy and have to buy more before the 31st.  This year the cycle of binge eating candy stops.

I leave for Boise on the 31st and I really want to be as fit and I can be before my 5K run with my sister.  It's the final countdown!  Do you have any goals for October?

I want it MY way!

Finally feeling better, hurray!  I did make it to crossfit yesterday and it was great to get back in the game.

Warm up: run 400 meters then do a partner burpee ladder.  Example:  I do one burpee, partner does one burpee, I do two burpees, partner does two burpees etc etc until we both get to 7 burpees.

Skill set: kettle bell snatches, ab rollers, jump squats
We went over and over the proper techniques and then did 5 rounds of 5 snatches on each arm, 10 ab rollers and 5 jump squats.

WOD: This was a EMOTM (every minute on the minute) for 12 minutes:

3 kettle bell snatches on each arm and 7 up/downs (similar to a burpee)

I AM SO SORE TODAY!!!!!!!

So we finally found out the details of our paleo challenge and I'm super bummed.  Usually it sounds like if you want to participate you pay $50.  After 6 weeks the 3 people with the most impressive results get the cash prize.  I believe Meagan said last time the winner won a few hundred dollars.  Unfortunately this time they changed the rules.  It's $15, no cash prize, and the $ goes towards a bbq meal that all participants will get after they complete the challenge.

I don't want any freaking food, I want to win $$$$$$!!!!!  I'm sorry but winning $ to me is a hugely motivating.  Eating a bbq meal is not.  I know I know I'm acting like a spoiled child who isn't getting things her way.  Still.......I'm quite frustrated.  I'm embarrassed to admit I actually felt like crying after I read the new rules.  *sigh*

Other rules include:

before/after pics
before/after weight
before/after measurements

doing a minimum of 3 WODS a week

a food log

We can partner up to support each other.  I don't really have any friends there, so I guess I'm on my own.

I'm sure that if I can stick to 6 weeks of Paleo and 6 weeks of crossfit 3 times a week plus running.....that I'll see some decent progress in my health and fitness goals.  I could've really used that prize money.

Oh well.  Such is life.  Time to "build a bridge and get over it".  (as my husband likes to say)  ha!

Running in the rain

I woke up today to rain.  I forced myself to go running anyway.  It actually felt quite invigorating.  I can hardly believe how my running endurance has changed since I first started this program. The first week you run just 60 seconds and then walk for 90 over and over.  Those 60 seconds seemed like an hour!  My legs would cramp up and I'd get terrible side aches.  Now I'm able to run for 3 minutes at a time.  I don't get cramps or side aches anymore either.  I'm really starting to look forward to running that 5K with my sister in two months.

I have a house full of healthy food so there are no excuses this week why I can't get my workouts in and nourish my body properly.

Have you ever heard of  Bountiful Baskets?  It's a fabulous nonprofit organization that gives you tons of fresh produce for only $15 a basket.  You get between 5 and 6 different varieties of fruit and 5 to 6 varieties of veggies each week.  It's a great way to eat healthy and not break the bank.  You can order as often or as little as you like.  There is no sign up fees, no commitment, just good food for a great price.  Check it out!

sprinting

Today was a running day.  I'm still using the Couch to 5K program and am totally loving it.  So in general you have a warm up, which is brisk walking, then intervals of running and walking followed up by a cool down walk.  Each week you run a bit more and walk a bit less until you are basically running the whole time.  Anyhoo....today on my last interval I decided to sprint.  I'm obviously the most tired by the time I get to the last running interval but I wanted to see what I could do.  Oh My Goodness, it felt like I was going to die!!  I just kept telling myself that it was only a couple minutes and that I can do anything for a couple of minutes.  I did it and it felt great!  Woohoo!!!!!  I go see my sister in 10 weeks.  I'm looking forward to running this 5K with her.  =)  I feel like I'm doing everything in my power to be physically ready.

I'm going to make that sweet and spicy paleo hash again for lunch like I had yesterday.  I've been dreaming about it all morning.  mmmmmmmm!!!

Tomorrow is crossfit.  I'm crossing my fingers that I have a bit more energy that I did on Monday.

It's not fun.

Today I got up and sat on the couch, sipping my morning coffee.  I didn't want to go running.  It's not fun.  It's physically painful and it's humiliating to run out in public when I feel so ugly and fat.  The problem is nothing changes when I choose to be lazy.

I laced up my shoes and went for my second run this week.  I definitely felt more tired and sore today than I did on Monday.  Maybe because on Monday I'd rested a couple days and today was the day after back to back Crossfit sessions.  Whatever the reason, I struggled a bit.

I'm anxious to really start seeing some changes in my body.  I want to see my pants start getting so loose that I need to go down another size.....same with my shirts.  I know I'm building muscle.  I can feel it in my arms and can tell a huge difference in what I can do at crossfit.  I just feel like the fat is taking it's sweet time to melt away.  I'm sure if I was eating 100% paleo it would speed up the process.  I'm just not sure if I'm willing to do that.  I eat mostly paleo, but definitely not 100%.  I wish this losing weight and getting stronger was an easier process.

I think for lunch I'm going to have a big salad with grilled chicken and bacon, andtonight I'm going to make salmon and steamed broccoli for dinner.  It's all about planning.

Have a good day!

More owie shoulders

Today our warm up and skill set was more shoulder exercises.  Ouch ouch ouch!  They were incredibly tender after yesterday's workout.

Our WOD was a 10 minute AMRAP

10 toes in the hole ( I did 10 ab rollers)

10 box hops

10 down/ups

 I was 3 down/ups away from getting in 5 full rounds.  (4 + 27)

I'm thankful that tomorrow is a running day and I won't have to go to crossfit.  I'm so very tired!

BOOBS AND BUTTS

My schedule got all wonky and so I ended up running today and will go to crossfit Thursday and Friday.  No matter how hard I try to carefully plan my week of workouts, things always seem to come up and throw everything off.  Oh well, I supposed that is just life in a nutshell.

My run today went GREAT!  Who am I?  How did I just write that my run went great?!  I keep researching beginner running for those that are overweight.  Today I slowed my pace a bit.  I concentrated really hard on take long, deep breaths in through the nose and out the mouth.  I'm also making sure I'm not running on the balls of my feet and that I keep my chest up so I can get plenty of oxygen when I'm breathing.  It's just all getting a little bit easier with each run.  I didn't feel like I was going to die.  I'm in shock!  I am so flipping excited that I'm changing my life one piece at a time.

I used to think that if I woke up one day and I was slim, that I'd be able to keep it that way, and I'd change my life in order to stay thin.  After a zillion crazy diets and exercise regimes, I realize now that for me the only thing that's going to make me keep my weight off, is tons of hard work.  When you work hard for something you tend to respect it more.

So yesterday I was out watering my flowers and my husband was sitting on the front porch directly behind me.  He said that he could really see my legs are starting to slim down.  Really?!  They still feel huge to me.  Today I stood with my behind facing the mirror.  What did I see?  I saw that the girl who had a double behind 4 months ago, now has just a smidge over one behind.  haha  I'm thrilled!

For anyone reading this that is heavy and is getting into running here is a small tidbit of advice.  We don't have much money.  We definitely live paycheck to paycheck and the only way I can afford to have a cell phone and do crossfit is by donating plasma and cleaning houses.  There is zero money for extras.  Well for girls who have big breasts like I do, it's insane how expensive a nice sports bra is.  I looked at several and they were all right around $100 each!  My sister mentioned a co-worker of hers puts a cheapy sports bra over her regular bra and claimed it worked wonders.  I was quite skeptical, but also desperate for some better support.  I tried it a couple months ago, and I'm a total believer!  You can get a $10 sports bra from walmart and put it over your regular bra.  You'll be shocked at how well they work together.  The best part is, it's cheap and it's not anymore uncomfortable that just a regular sports bra is.

Sunburns and Triathlons

Today is the last day I'll see my in-laws for a whole year!  Is it wrong to say just how happy that makes me?  I must say that I'm quite proud of myself.  I've held my ground and not let my mother-in-law walk all over me.  I've been kind and have done everything in my power to hold my tongue and not say anything snarky or rude.  All in all in was quite a successful visit, although it was stressful, it went about as smooth as it could, considering who I was dealing with.  What an answer to prayer!

We've been busy bee's while they've been here.  We went cherry and raspberry picking, rode a gondola, had picnics, went to the beach, had dinner out, movies, etc etc.  We went to the beach on Saturday.  I, Erica Lynn Kovacs, took off my clothes at the beach and didn't cover my flaws in front of my in-laws.  I swam with my kids and chose to enjoy myself instead of hide under layers of clothing.  I was very proud of myself.  I wasn't proud of my white, jello legs, but was proud I didn't let fear stand in my way of spending quality time with my kids.

I'm a pale girl.  Like super pale.  I like to say that I reflect the sun I'm so white.  While at the beach I used some 50 spf sunscreen.  Apparently it was expired.  I didn't realize this until I got home 4 hours later and went to take a shower and when I took off my swimming suit I saw a red lobster girl in the mirror.  I was insanely red. Here's a picture I took with my phone after I got out of the shower.  It continued to redden and blister as the evening went on.
My forehead and nose are so burned they're covered in water blisters.  My chest and shoulders hurt so bad I can't even wear a bra.  I tried to put on my sports bra for crossfit this morning and I couldn't do it.  It hurt so incredibly bad.  This is definitely the worst burn I've ever had.  I'm putting aloe on it every hour and doing everything I can to help it heal quickly.  I'm hoping that by tomorrow it'll be less painful so I can at least wear a bra.  I'm determined to get in my 3 crossfit workouts this week.

On a different note, I was talking to hubby the other night about where I see myself in the next few years.  I told him that I want to start running 5K's and maybe even do like a mini triathlon.  I really really really want to be part of those types of competitions.  I have no desire to actually win but just to do them and actually finish.  I'm super excited about the prospect of actually becoming this athlete I keep dreaming about.  My dear sweet hubby just looked at me and said that he knows I can do it and that he can't wait to be cheering me on when I get there.  I love that man!

Speaking of running.......I still hate it.....still loathe it with ever fiber of my being.........but it doesn't scare me as much as it did.  I will take that as a huge step in the right direction.

I didn't wear any pants!

How is it Monday already?!  What a whirl wind of a week!!  I'm still not completely well.  I still have a lingering cough, but for the most part I'm feeling much better.  We've spent most of this past week outdoors.  It's been hot and sunny and really just perfect weather.

I've mentioned before that I have a very active husband and for most of the past 11 years of marriage I have chosen not to be active with him.  I told myself that this year I was going to do everything he did.  If he goes hiking, I go hiking, if he goes to the beach to swim then......GASP......I will put on a swimming suit and go to the beach to swim.  The beach is the hardest for me.  I haven't worn just a swimming suit to the beach since I was in grade school.  I'd wear shorts over my suit to hide my thighs or a shirt to hide my tummy.  Anyway we went to the beach last weekend and as soon as we got our chairs and umbrella set up, I quickly took off my shirt and pants.  I stood there on the beach in nothing but my swimming suit and sunglasses.  I looked around to see if anyone was going blind from all my grossness.....but no one seemed to notice, let alone give two craps.

As time went on that day I saw several people who were in much worse shape than I was....and they all ran around in their swimming suits without a care in the world.  A few even wore bikinis!!!!!   They didn't seem to care, so why do I?  The best part of the day was swimming with my kids.  They were tickled pink that I got in the water with them.  This is what life is all about!  Spending time with the ones you love, not sitting on the beach, wearing pants and stressing over how fat you are.  For some reason I've had it in my head that unless you are perfect at something, you don't even try it.  Ever since I was a small child, that's how I've felt about life.

Long story short, I went to the beach several times this past week and each time I've taken off my shirt and pants and have tried my best to not let my fears and insecurities cloud my thinking.  I still hate how I look, but this is who I am today and I'm working on changing what I don't like.  So until I become a major babe, I'm going to strut my white flabby dimpled legs at the beach.  ;)

I did go to crossfit today.  Today was beyond hard.  I can tell that I don't have my full strength back from being so sick.  The smallest things just wear me out completely.  We started off with junkyard dog.  I was ready to quit after that.  Our skill set was 4 rounds of various kettle bell exercises.  Again, would've loved to have grabbed my keys and headed home afterwards.  Our WOD was 3 rounds of running 400 meters and 15 over head squats with a weighted bar.  I used a super light bar.  This was my first time doing over head squats, so the movement for me was more important than the weight.

We stood up at the white board while Jonathan filled us in on what the WOD entailed.  He then told us that we were going to do a "warm up" run before we started the WOD.  What the heck?! Nononononono NO NO NOOOOOOOOO!!!  I wanted to cry.  Running is my enemy! So we all lined up outside and did our warm up 400 meter run.  Oh my goodness.  I was spent by the time I made it back inside.  I was the last one in, as usual.

As they counted down the seconds until we started the WOD I just kept praying that I wouldn't get sick.  I was starting to already feel slightly nauseous.  I ran 400 meters the 1st round, then did 15 OHS (over head squats) and then Meagan and Jonathan both told me to just run 200 meters the last two rounds.  My 2nd round was painful.  I got the worst stitch in my side while running.  UGH!!  My 3rd round brought out the tears again.  My eyes started to water and I could feel a cry-a-thon start to build.  I bit the insides of my cheeks as hard as I could to stop myself from crying.  I finished my 3rd round in 11 min 38 seconds.  I believe I got the worst time and I was the only one (I believe) who modified the run.  So yeah....once again......I'm in dead last.  Oh well.  At least I showed up, I tried my best, and I did everything they asked me to do.

My in-laws arrive tomorrow.  My anxiety is building with each approaching day.  I feel like I'm going to throw up just thinking about it.  I'm praying that God gives me peace of mind while they are here and that this would be an enjoyable visit unlike every other visit that's ever occurred thus far.

Cinderella

I didn't sleep well last night.  I woke up with a sore throat.  It's overcast and staying curled up in bed sounded lovely.  BUT I still got up and got my plump behind to CrossFit.  I fought with myself about it all morning.  I'm glad I'm starting to listen to the "angel" voice more than the "devil" voice.  The more I force myself to go the more I realize that I can do this.  I can become an athlete.  I can take control of my life.  I can become the person I've always wanted to be.

I was talking with my mom on the phone this morning and I told her that I feel like I'm stronger mentally.....more than I ever remember.  She told me that she felt like I'm finally becoming the person I was meant to be.  That statement made me feel great and awful all at the same time.  Great because it feels good to be doing what I was born to do, and yet awful because I've wasted 33 years.  I know what you are thinking, YOU CAN'T DWELL ON THE PAST.  THE PAST IS THE PAST. You are right.

I saw this quote on another blog yesterday and it really resonated with me.

I've had a few people tell me how brave I was for changing my life and starting crossfit.  It bothers me a bit because I don't feel brave, I don't feel like I have any courage.  But this quote kind of brought it all home for me.  Maybe courage isn't being fearless.....maybe it's just continually trying and working towards your goals despite the occasional obstacle.

Today's warm up was two rounds of running 200 meters, 8 ring rows, and 8 toes to bar.  I did (what I think are called) V-ups instead.  I've been reading some info on running.  I wanted to see if I could find any tips on how to do it more efficiently.  Today I tried to slow it down just a smidge and lengthen my stride.  It felt a little better.  Megan told me that my running looked better today, so maybe I'm actually doing something right!   Speaking of running......I'll be going to Boise in Nov to visit my sister.  I'm flying in on Halloween and staying a few nights.  I'm going to run my first 5K while there.  I'm super excited and totally freaked out.  It definitely gives me something to work towards in the mean time.

Our skill set was weighted pull-ups.  Again, can't really do pull-ups, so I did 5 rounds of 5 negative pull-ups on the rings.  I've never used my muscles so much in my life.  I've worked out throughout the years, but never really with weights or weight related exercises.  It's pretty much been pure cardio.  Cardio was never really tough.  I might get tired or winded, but it was never "hard".  I never felt like I was going to die.  I pretty much feel like I'm going to die each and every time I set foot in my crossfit.

Our WOD was 4 rounds of rowing 500 meters.  Again we couldn't get less than a 3 second difference in our times or we'd have to do 25 burpees.  Oh my flippin word.  I remember the pain and agony I felt last Wednesday, and it was back to haunt me again.  It's funny the thoughts that run through your brain when you get scared.....maybe I should fake an injury, maybe I could sneak out and no one would notice, maybe I could row only three rounds and not tell anyone.....the list goes on and on.  My first round I clocked in at 2 min 14 seconds.

2nd round: 2 min 9 seconds
3rd round: 2 min 15 seconds
4th round: can't remember

I know I didn't owe any burpees so I was at least 2 min 17 seconds.

During my 4th round I stopped for about 3 seconds to catch my breath and relieve my burning legs and arms.  Megan came up behind me and told me to keep going.  Ugh!  I started up again and my shoe fell off.  Instead of stopping again I just kept pulling as hard as I possibly could.  I finished.  I grabbed my shoe and sat down and tried desperately to catch my breath.  Everything hurt, everything ached, my body is so not used to this type of torture.

I'm beyond thankful I didn't owe any burpees.  I think I would've burst into tears if I did.  I did cry on my way home....AGAIN.  I'm confused why crossfit makes me cry so much.  Oh well.  As I drove home I passed the grocery store, and as I drove by I saw the reader board highlight their sale on donuts.  Dear Jesus, help me!  I drove right on by, got home and collapsed on the couch.  I did it.  I finished another grueling workout.

Grace

I got super busy on Friday and wasn't able to post anything, but I did go to CrossFit like a good girl.  Seems like as the summer progresses the busier I get.  I was sore all weekend from last weeks workouts.  It was the "good" kind of sore.  =)

My mother in law comes in exactly two weeks.  I'm trying super hard to not let her stress me out, but after 12 years of dealing with her crap, it's easier said than done.  I'm just bracing myself for some rude comments about my weight or how I raise my kids, or what we eat.  She gets pretty angry when I don't have my house stocked with her favorite foods and beverages.  I don't buy potato chips or soda or cookies or most other junk food.  If my family is craving something sweet, then I will make it homemade.  Processed foods and drinks are no longer allowed in our home.  Anyway, I know I shouldn't dwell on what has yet to occur.

On a different note today we did "Grace".

The warm-up was a 400 meter run, and then we grabbed a partner and did "junkyard dog".  It's jumping over your partner and then crawling underneath them.  Running and jumping.....not my best strengths.  We did a killer kettle bell skill set.  Lunges with kettle bells, sit ups with kettle bells, and sitting in a lunge position, lifting the kettle bell over head over and over....several rounds of everything.  I was feeling quite exhausted after the warm up and skill set......I just wanted to go home at that point.  I think forcing myself to actually attend class is good for me because I'm starting to realize how easily I give up or want to quit.  If I was home alone, I could pretty much guarantee that I'd have quit and stopped.

Our WOD was "Grace".  Grace is 30 clean and jerks.  They want girls to do 95lbs.  I was only able to do 45 lbs and it was SO incredibly hard.  First of all the movement is so not natural for me.  It was frustrating me that I couldn't seem to grasp the concept of how to do the lift properly.  Megan helped me out and after some practice I got the hang of it.  We had to do 30 reps, no matter how long it took.  I was able to get it done in 6 min 15 seconds.  The tops of my shoulders felt like they were going to shrivel up and fall off, taking my arms with them.  Just picking up my purse when it was time to go home was quite the feat.  haha

Here is a 2 min video showing how to do clean and jerks.

It's a cloudy and rainy day.  A perfect day to relax after my tiring morning.  I need to figure out something smart for dinner.  Time to hit the web and look for some yummy paleo recipes.

Becoming a SUPERHERO......

I hope every one's Father's Day was nice.  We went on a crazy long hike.  My husband wanted to climb to the top of some lookout point at Farragut State Park.  We started off on a trail and then would switch to another trail.  We did this a few times and then things got tricky.  We found a large pile of bear poo at the base of a very steep and rocky trail.  To me that was a sign to turn around and go back, but my hubby viewed it as nothing to be worried about.  We climbed slowly and carefully over rocks and trees.  The kids were starting to complain and I could feel myself getting cranky.  I was hot, covered in sweat, and I was exhausted.  We finally made it to the top, well, almost.  The last 50 feet was nothing but large boulders that had to be climbed in order to reach the lookout point.  Umm no.  I'm not going to risk injury to myself or my children.  So hubby climbed it with our oldest, much to my horror.  I'm thankful they made it up and back down safely.  The weather was just gorgeous.  It was about 80 degrees, sunny, with just a slight breeze.  perfect!  After our long hike, we ate our packed lunch and took the kids and dog to the beach to cool down.

I thought for sure I'd wake up tired and sore after yesterday's hike, but surprisingly I felt great.  Today we did a 400 meter run before we started our warm up.  Then we did drills back and forth across the gym floor, running with high knees, running butt kickers, inch worms, skipping with high knees, and some various lunges.

When I first started looking into crossfit I kept running across the saying," YOUR WORKOUT IS MY WARMUP".  They weren't joking!

Our skill set was 4 rounds:

10 box step ups on right leg
10 box step ups on left leg
15 right shoulder presses
15 left shoulder presses
20 second right side plank
20 second center plank
20 second left side plank

After the skill sets, I wanted to lay on the floor and just die.  I could see my kids in the kid's corner watching me and they kept smiling and giving me thumbs up.  I love those guys.♥

Our WOD was a 12 minute AMRAP (as many rounds/reps as possible)

400 meter run or row
15 ring dips

I chose rowing.  I haven't rowed in almost 5 weeks, so I figured it was time.  I did 15 push ups, since I'm not strong enough to do the ring dips.

I felt pretty good my first two rounds, but my 3rd round was absolutely a killer.  By the 4th round, I didn't think I could row for even 1 more second.  I got about 2/3rds of the way through my 4th round when time was up.  There were several people who just collapsed on the floor for a few minutes to catch their breath.  This CrossFit stuff is no joke!

On the car ride home, my kids asked me if I'd make up some kiddie crossfit workouts for them so they can get strong and fit like me.  Awww!!  Seriously?!  I felt so good inside!  Although I still feel like a fat failure who lets fear rule my life, my kids see me as their superhero and that touches me beyond words.  I need to hang onto that and not let self doubt get in my way.

Running, donuts and crying

Have I ever mentioned that I hate running?  I have?  Well I'm going to say it again, I HATE RUNNINGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Like super hate it.  Ugh!  Today was a very very tough day for me at crossfitcda.

Let me start off by saying that I can't afford a crossfit membership unless I clean house for my parents twice a month and donate plasma.  Donating plasma definitely wipes me out.  So I'm not sure if today was so hard because I gave plasma yesterday or if it was just really hard in general.

We started off with a 400 meter run and then did all sorts of different lunges back and forth across the gym floor.  I watch the other people and it just seems to easy for them.  I wonder how well they'd do these exercises if they had 90 pounds of extra flesh on their bodies.  It irritates me that some of the moves we do are literally impossible for me because of my extra weight.  The padding keeps me from contorting my body in the way I want.  I must say that I didn't really notice before I started crossfit, just how much my fat gets in the way.  The more I'm there, the more angry I get that I ever let myself get to this point.  I know I know......eventually it'll come off, I understand that.  I really do, but for now I'm angry and frustrated.

Our skill set today was front squats with a barbell and adding weight to it with each set that we did.  The way I had to hold my arms seemed very awkward to me.  This movement definitely didn't come naturally for me.  It's been fun to learn all these new movements.  I kind of feel like a bit of a bad ass when I use the barbell.  haha

Our WOD was to run 800 meters, then do three rounds of

15 ring dips (I did push ups)

20 walking lunges

after you did three rounds of those then you finished off the WOD with another 400 meter run.

Most people finished between 5 and 8 minutes.  It took me 15 minutes to complete it.  Derek asked if I wanted to modify the workout and cut it down a bit, but I said no.  I really wanted to say yes, but at the same time, I know I need to keep pushing myself way out of my comfort zone.

By the time I'd finished most people had already stretched out and were leaving.  I was on the verge of a full fledged cry-a-thon three different times.  I've never pushed myself this hard.  These workouts are so incredibly painful and for some reason when I get to where I don't think I can do another lunge, I feel the need to cry.  I'd rather chew my own arm off than cry.  I avoid crying at all costs.  I'll bite the inside of my cheeks so the pain will distract me from crying.  For some reason crossfit brings out the tears in me.  How aggravating!

I suppose I should be happy that I completed the workout......and I guess I am......sorta.  Today I just feel like the outcast who can't keep up and it's disheartening.   Oh well.  Upward and onward.

As I was driving home I passed a grocery store that is about a mile from my house.  Each time I drive by it, the reader board catches my eye.  I tend to drive by each time it flashes it's sale on donuts.  Oh my goodness I love donuts.  It's weird for me to pass the grocery store while I dream of eating donuts all the while my body is throbbing with pain and agony from my workout.  I suppose each time I resist the temptation of quitting or eating several donuts, I should be glad that I'm changing my life and those burdensome chains don't hold me down anymore.

Tonight my crossfit is offering free babysitting from 6:30-8:30.  So hubby and I are going to have a couple hours to ourselves while the kids play.

Have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend.♥

Balls

I had quite the battle in my head today and didn't want to go to class.  I did and I didn't.  I kept hearing voices saying that I wasn't good enough, it was going to be too hard, I was going to fail.  On the same note, I'd also hear that I could do it, it would be worth the hard work, I'm getting stronger.  Back and forth all morning.  I felt like I was going crazy!  I ended up going and I'm glad I did.

We started off doing a 400 meter run.  I was able to run with the group the entire time!!!!!! ME!  The fat girl!!  A few people passed me but for the most part I was right in the middle of the group the entire way.  YAY!!  Coach D (Derek) told me he could tell I was getting stronger and I can't even tell you how much I needed to hear that today.

After running we got a partner and tossed heavy medicine balls back and forth to each other.  Next we got on the floor and locked feed together and one person would grab the ball lift it over their head while their back was on the floor then sit up and hand the ball to their partner.....it sorta resembled a teeter totter when we got the hang of it.

Next we did back squats and hollow rocks.  This was my 1st time doing back squats.  We used a barbell and added weights to both sides.  Then we put the bar on the back of our necks and did deep squats.  I had a bit of trouble with the form, but in the end I felt like I got the hang of it.

This 8 second video gives you an idea of what hollow rocks are.  http://gymnasticswod.com/content/hollow-rock

Our WOD was 150 wall balls with a partner.  One person held a chin up position while the other person did as many wall balls as they could.  Then we'd switch.  They were so tough!!!  By the end I could feel my heart was racing and catching my breath seemed difficult.

We had a long cool down and stretch session which felt horrible and amazing all at the same time.  It's painful and yet it feels great.....CrossFit is full of contradictions it seems.

Hubby and I will be working on building our back patio this weekend, I'll be shocked if we complete it.  At least I know I'll be getting a great workout both days.

I need to eat some lunch before I go grocery shopping or I'll end up buying something I'll deeply regret.  Hope everyone has a lovely weekend.

Endurance!!

It's been a few days since I've blogged.  I've been taking advantage of the gorgeous weather to do all my planting.  I got a ton of flowers planted and started a container garden.  I used a half of a whisky barrel and planted organic rainbow carrots and 5 gallon buckets to plant sweet bell peppers and jalapenos.  I also got 3 huge organic beefsteak tomato plants in containers as well.  Can't wait to see how the veggies do!

I woke up feeling pretty awful.  Super sore throat, tummy ache, and stuffy nose.  I took some meds, drank a chocolate sunbutter protein shake and went to Crossfit despite my brain telling me to stay home and rest in bed.

Our warm up was .......you guessed it....running.  We ran 400 meters.  I was shocked that I was able to run the entire way and was only behind the rest of the group by about 5 seconds.  How and when did that happen?  Don't get me wrong, I was super tired and breathing like I was going to die, but I did it and kept up.  Yeehaw!  I can feel my endurance increasing and it's so exciting!

Next we did our skill set, which was deadlifts.  The first time I only used 20 lbs and was focusing more on form than weight.  Today I was able to do several sets of 150 lbs.  I know that to some that is not much weight, but for someone like me who hasn't done any type of lifting in her life except to lift food to her lips, this was quite exciting.  =)

Our WOD was 5 rounds of

25 double unders ( I had to do 75 single unders)

18 overhead kettle bell swings

12   20" box jumps (I do 15" box steps)

For some reason I had it in my head that I only had to do 3 rounds and by the end of the third round I could feel all my energy being drained away.  Catching my breath seemed almost impossible and I was drenched.  As I was finishing up the last two box steps I looked up at the white board and realized I still had 2 more rounds to go.  FUDGE!!!!  I could feel tears start creep up and told myself to just shut up and not cry and finish the flipping WOD.  I finished in 12min 21 seconds.  To say I was wiped out would be the understatement of the year.  I'm glad I went despite not feeling good this morning.  My throat still hurts like a mother, but other than that I feel fine.  This weekend will be spent outdoors so we can continue working on our back patio.  Fingers crossed I get some sun.....I'm tired of being so pale I almost look neon white.

Happy Mother's Day to all you mom's!

Psyched Myself Out

So my plan is going to CrossFit  MWF.....and getting a nice walk in on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  I found out that my CrossFit posts the daily WOD online so you can see what is in store for that day.  I woke up and got online and saw that it was mainly running stuff today.  Bleh!  I  know that running is definitely something that I need to be working on, but OMGoodness it's so hard to run when you have ninety pounds of fat strapped to your body.

I hate that I psyched myself out.  I suppose I shouldn't even look online to see what the workout is, because truly it doesn't matter.  I need to do it, no matter how much I might hate it.  Since I shucked out of going to CrossFit I decided to go online and find a WOD I could do at home where I wouldn't need any type of equipment.  I found one and boy did it kick my booty!

The warm up was 3 rounds

50 jumping jacks

10 push ups

10 air squats

I took a 5 min break in between the warm up and workout.  I got some water, opened up some windows to get a slight cross breeze throughout the house to help me cool off a bit.

My WOD was 4 rounds:

25 push ups

20 lunges w/ each leg

15 sit ups

10 air squats

5 burpees

60 second planks

This ended up being much harder than it looked.  Halfway through my brain tried to convince myself that just doing 2 rounds was good enough.  I stood in my living room arguing with myself and I ended up finishing all 4 rounds.  I was thoroughly worn out.

My husband called me this afternoon to see how my workout went and he was a little ticked I didn't make it to class.  He reminded me just how much it costs and that I need to go no matter how much I hate running.  He's right.  I need to go.

I still feel like I'm in a bit of a "funk" since last Friday's workout.  I think it was so hard that it scared me and then seeing how much running there was to do today, I let that fear keep me from going to class.  I told my husband at the very beginning that I was tired of letting fear rule my choices in life and here I catch myself doing it again.
I suppose we all have setbacks along the journeys we take.  I will go on Wednesday and will give it 100% no matter how much I may hate it.

What I ate today:

Breakfast~eggs, turkey sausage

post workout snack~chocolate protein shake

Lunch~salad w/ grilled pork and homemade oil/vin dressing

Dinner~paleo sloppy joe stuffed peppers, sauteed french green beans, side salad w/ homemade oil/vin dressing.

Running running running........

Ok, so I wrote a huge long post yesterday only to accidentally delete the entire post.  Grrr!  So today I will recap and it won't be nearly as long nor entertaining as the previous one was.  ;)

I was pretty tired Friday morning and my brain tried to convince myself that I didn't need to go to CrossFit, but I told my brain to SHUT IT and I went anyway.  As soon as I walked in and looked at that day's WOD (workout of the day) I wished I had stayed in bed.

Our warm up was a 400 meter run.  Then we ran with high knees for 100m, butt kicks for 100m, backwards for 100m and skipping with high knees for the remaining 100m.  I felt quite sick after all that.  My lungs burned, my legs were shaking, I felt just awful.  Next we went back into the box and did several leg exercises back and forth.  As I looked around it seemed everyone in there was exhausted and that made me feel better.  I wasn't the only one in some serious pain.  Our WOD to run 800 meters for time, row 500 meters for time, and ride the airdyne bike for 1 min and try to burn as many calories as possible.

We had 45 minutes to complete those three items and could take as much time as we needed to rest in between.  I took a 5 min break, drank some water and did the running first since I loathe it with every fiber of my being.  I was able to jog 200m, walk 200m, jog 100m, walk 200m, jog 100m.  My time was 6 min 50 sec.  I got the worst time by far.  I rested for another 5 min and did the bike next.  I burned 16 calories in my 1 minute.  I was 2nd to worst.  After another 5 minute break I climbed onto the rower.  I was able to row the first 300 meters without too much pain but the last 200 meters were a KILLER!  Everything hurt so bad I wanted to quit and just start crying.  Megan came over and stood behind me and kept telling me to pull harder, use my hips, push off with my heels faster etc etc.  She was encouraging me to finish strong.  The pain my muscles felt was incredible.  I finished in 2min 58 seconds.  I wanted to collapse and die.  Lungs, legs, arms, everything burned and hurt.  After collecting myself I rolled out my muscles on a foam roller and went home.

It was by far the hardest thing I've done to date at CrossFit.  Although my times are far behind everyone else, I'm just happy I'm able to complete the tasks given to me.  That in and of itself is very rewarding.

What I ate:

Breakfast~2 eggs, 2 turkey sausages

post workout snack~1 apple, 2 TBS almond butter

Lunch~1/2 avocado, 1/2 can of albacore tuna, 1 hard boiled egg mashed together w/ a little salt and pepper

Dinner~Paleo sloppy joe stuffed peppers and sweet potato fries

snack~2 squares dark choc with blueberries

Frightened Fatty Gets Her First Taste Of Crossfit

Frightened Fatty Starts Crossfit

Hello world.  I'm a 33 year old wife and mother of 3 kids who is a fatty.  I have been overweight since I was 8 years old.  I didn't get to be "huge" until after I started having kids.  I'm super shy and being a bigger person, I tend to hide out in the background and lurk in the shadows.  It feels like a cliche to say I've tried every diet and exercise regime known to man, but it's true.  I found myself at the bottom of a very deep and very dark pit and I'm ready to do whatever it takes to climb out.

I was thinking a couple weeks ago about starting over.  If I could start my life over, knowing what I know today, what would I want to be.  I realized that more than anything I'd like to be an athlete.  Someone who can run a marathon, hike a mountain ridge, or bike through the wilderness.  I want to be strong, agile, lean, and fit.  As I daydreamed about this different life, I had a thought.  Maybe if I started to eat like an athlete, exercise like an athlete, and get the mindset of an athlete, that maybe I could slowly become one.  Once that thought entered my brain I couldn't get it out again.  It was like that tiny spark ignited my entire world.  I started looking online and found Crossfit.  Now those people were ATHLETES!!

I found a local Crossift online and emailed them.  I explained that I was a 33 yr old mom who has approx 90 lbs to lose.  I was terrified, but wanted to know if they thought I could do crossfit even though I was incredibly out of shape.  They wrote back that day and told me that I absolutely could and to come in and get some more information.  I went in a few days later and talked to Megan.  She was super friendly, gave me a bunch of information and promised that all the exercises could be scaled down, so I could participate.  I went home and signed up that afternoon for Crossfit bootcamp.  It's a two week course, three classes per week.

Two months ago I decided to give up all sugar and flour from my diet.  I ate meat, eggs, dairy, organic whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds, and lots of vegetables and fruit.  I lost about 12 lbs and felt really good.  It gave me more energy and I felt happier and more alive.  After researching all things Crossfit I saw that most of the athletes ate Paleo.  Paleo was similar to how I had been eating, except they cut out all grains, beans, legumes, and dairy.  I'm super thankful that I changed my diet when I did, because starting Crossfit AND having to change my eating would have been too overwhelming.  I went on pinterest and various other websites and have gathered a ton of yummy Paleo recipes to have in my arsenal.

Last night was my first Crossfit bootcamp workout.  I was super nervous all day.  It was hard for me to even eat or drink because of how nervous I was.  After watching a gazillion youtube videos and reading countless blogs, I knew that whatever I was in for was going to rock my world.  I tried on my workout clothes and looked in the mirror.  I had on an oversized tshirt that matched my new Merrell shoes.  I had on my biggest, most comfortable pair of workout pants.  I deceided to try a few squats and realized quickly that these pants rode up my rear with each and every squat.  No matter what I did, I had a giant wedgie every time I stood back up.  Dang it!  So I decided to run to Walmart to see if I could find a better option.  I found a pair of Danskin yoga pants.  They passed the squat test, zero wedgies.  Unfortunately these pants were much tighter and clung to every inch of my ham hocks.  I went back to the mirror and turned around so my rear faced the mirror and I turned my head to see my backside in the reflection.  Oh it so wasn't pretty.  I realized that the back of my thighs were so big that they had a bulge on each one.  When standing with my feet together I could see my giant ass and then below it, it looked like a smaller ass as the two bulges were pressed together.  Great.  I got rid of the wedgie problem, but now I had a double ass.

Crossfitcda (my Crossfit) is located downtown.  It's full of people.  Just parking my car and walking to the box ( that's the term they call it, instead of a gym) was humiliating.  I could feel my face burning with embarrassment as I waddled my way to the box.  Once inside I felt instant panic.  I saw tons of beautiful people.  Most were toned, tight, strong, and super sweaty.  Jonathan saw me looking lost and frightened and pulled me over to a table to sign a waiver form.  As we waited for all the other bootcampers to come in and get settled I tried my best to hide and not be seen.  Although it's kinda hard to do when I'm twice the size of every person in there.  Soon after, the bootcampers and I huddled around Jonathan as he told us about Crossfit and what to expect.  He talked about the food plan and I felt great because I was the only one already eating the approved foods.  One point for me!  Next thing I knew we were told to go on a little run.  RUN!!!!!!  This girl doesn't run!  This girl can walk, she can even speed walk, but RUN?!  We ran around the block.  Me and my two asses behind everyone else, desperately trying to keep up.  I ran the entire way except for the last 200 feet or so.  I tried to slink back into the box without being noticed but I was sucking in air so fast and hard I think everyone in or around that city block saw and heard me.

Soon they started going over the appropriate way to do a squat.  We did squat after squat after squat, then they told us to do ten more.  My legs felt like they had been lit on fire.  Next we moved onto pushups.  Obviously I can't do regular pushups, but I can do a few girly ones.  After doing several we moved onto the rings.  I can't remember what they were called but you basically hold onto the rings, lean all the way back and pull yourself back up to a standing position using your back and some arm muscles.  Holy moly, my whole body feels like it's going to shut down.  Finally we cover burpees or what they call down and ups.  Again I was showed a modified down and up and I could barely do that.  At this time I'm thinking that class should be wrapping up and I'd be able to go home soon.  WRONG-O!  It's at this point when our instructor says, "Ok now it's time to start your workout".   Sheer panic spread throughout my body.  I wanted to grab my purse and run out of there, never to return.  He said he wanted us to do three rounds of the exercises we just learned, 15 of each, 12 of each, and the 9 of each.  He looked at me and said I could just do 12 of each and then 9 of each.  Oh lucky me.  He started his stopwatch and told us to start.  I tried to pace myself.  12 squats, done......12 girly push ups, done.....12 ring things, done.......4 down and ups and then I couldn't do anymore.  I just stood there panting like a dog and nausea hit me hard.  I ran for the bathroom and puked my guts out.  Then I cleaned myself up and just started to cry.  I felt like such a complete loser.  A moron.  An idiot.  Who did I think I was starting Crossfit when I was such a fatty.  Megan came in the bathroom and brought me a glass of water.  I wiped off the tears and rejoined my group.  Most had finished the workout and a few were busting out the last few exercises.  The instructors came over and patted me on the back and told me it was all going to be ok.  That before I knew it, I'd be stronger and leaner and I'd be able to knock that workout out of the water.  I wanted to punch each and every one of them in the face.  I hated myself for being such a failure.  As I left the box and drove home I bawled.  I cried the entire 15 minutes it took me to get home.

After a good cry and talking with my husband I started to feel a little bit better.  This is going to be a hard journey for me.  It's going to be embarrassing and humbling.  I'm going to be the biggest and the least fit person there for a very long time, but it's going to get better.  I'm going to get stronger.  I'm going to lean up.  I'm going to succeed in my dream to become an athlete.

What I ate today:

Breakfast~2 strips of bacon, 2 eggs cooked in coconut oil, and a cup of fresh pineapple.
Snack~ 1/2 of a peanut butter larabar
Lunch~6oz of ground turkey seasoned with onion, garlic, and salt and cooked in coconut oil in a pan, 1 cup of raw carrot sticks.
